Stormseeker

QUICK REVIEW: Stormseeker – Alec Worley

For day four of Black Library’s 2016 Summer of Reading campaign we’re introduced to Alec Worley and his first story for Black Library, Stormseeker. When dark eldar pirates attack an Imperial world, the Space Wolves of the Deathwolves Great Company launch a counter-attack and Anvarr Rustmane leads his fellow Iron Priests in piloting the airborne elements of the assault. Forced to go into battle without placating the machine-spirit of his Stormwolf, Anvarr finds himself in a desperate fight against the dark eldar’s own flyers where he needs all of his skill, and the cooperation of his gunship, to survive.

Ragnar Blackmane

Ragnar Blackmane – Aaron Dembski-Bowden

The first Space Marine Legends title – not to be confused with the Lords of the Space Marines series – Aaron Dembski-Bowden’s Ragnar Blackmane is a short novel tackling perhaps the most well known of all Space Wolves, the titular Ragnar. Released in Limited Edition hardback and standard ebook formats back in 2015, it takes the form of two interlinked stories set approximately 40 years apart but both taking place towards the very end of the 41st millennium. In one strand we see Ragnar as Wolf Lord, leading his Great Company in the defence of Cadia against the 13th Black Crusade, while in the other we see him as a newly promoted Wolf Guard, still headstrong and clashing variously with Dark Angels, Flesh Tearers and his own packmates.

The Young Wolf's Return

QUICK REVIEW: The Young Wolf’s Return – Robbie MacNiven

Part two in Robbie MacNiven’s serialised Legacy of Russ novel, The Young Wolf’s Return carries on where The Lost King left off with the Wolves battling daemons across the Fenris system under the looming threat of the Dark Angels-led Imperial fleet. The Wolves are strung out across the system, missing the leadership of the absent Logan Grimnar, while something is amiss within the ranks of the Dark Angels. Help may be on the way however, as not all of the Great Companies have yet returned to Fenris.

The Lost King

QUICK REVIEW: The Lost King – Robbie MacNiven

Part one of another serialised Space Wolf novel, this time from Robbie MacNiven, The Lost King picks up the story where David Annandale left off in Curse of the Wulfen. While the immediate threat has been defeated, the embattled Wolves are still fighting on against the forces of Chaos across the entire Fenris system. With rumours circulating that Logan Grimnar has fallen, and an Imperial fleet led by the Dark Angels approaching in search of answers, the remaining Space Wolves are not out of danger. Something sinister is pulling strings from the shadows, but the players are not all out in the open yet.

Legends of the Dark Millennium : Space Wolves

Legends of the Dark Millennium : Space Wolves – Black Library Anthology

Originally serialised in eight separate short stories spread out over a period of months, Legends of the Dark Millennium – Space Wolves now collects together these stories from four Black Library authors into a single volume. Not so much an anthology as a collective novel, it focuses on Ulrik the Slayer and Krom Dragongaze as they embark on a desperate search for Logan Grimnar after the Great Wolf fails to return from his Great Hunt. Each author tackles two parts of the wider story, beginning with Ben Counter and moving through Steve Lyons and Rob Sanders before finishing off with CL Werner.

Wrath of the Wolf

QUICK REVIEW: Wrath of the Wolf – CL Werner

Black Library’s eight-part Space Wolf mini-series comes to an end with CL Werner’s second contribution, Wrath of the Wolf. Having prevented a chaos ritual with the unlikely assistance of the Alpha Legion, Ulrik the Slayer and Krom Dragongaze follow a new lead into the Eye of Terror as they continue to seek out Logan Grimnar. Reaching the planet Dargur, where Bjorn himself once searched for Leman Russ, they embark on the final leg of their long hunt with the small matter of a chaos world between them and Grimnar.

Curse of the Wulfen

Curse of the Wulfen – David Annandale

Released to tie in with Games Workshop’s latest 40k campaign supplement of the same name, David Annandale’s short novel Curse of the Wulfen sees him tackling that rare beast – an event which moves the 40k storyline forwards. In this case it’s the return to the Imperium of Man of the Space Wolves 13th Company, long-lost heroes from ten thousand years ago who emerge from the Warp much-changed, as the Wulfen. When Harald Deathwolf leads his Great Company to the rescue of a world plagued by daemons and finds aid from feral, beastly creatures still clad in scraps of slate-gray ceramite, the Space Wolves welcome their ancient brethren back (with some reservations) and proceed to seek out as many of the Wulfen as they can. Meanwhile other elements of the Imperium don’t see things in quite the same light.

Scent of a Traitor

QUICK REVIEW : Scent of a Traitor – CL Werner

Black Library’s multi-part Space Wolves serial moves into its final stages with Scent of a Traitor by CL Werner, the seventh instalment in the ongoing saga. Ulrik, Krom and their Dark Angel allies have pursued the traitor Marine Sathar the Undone across the city of Eyriax and brought him to heel once more, but Ulrik finds himself faced with an unappetising choice to make if he wants to learn all he can of Logan Grimnar’s whereabouts.

The Wolf Within

QUICK REVIEW : The Wolf Within – Rob Sanders

The Wolf Within is the sixth short story in Black Library’s ongoing Space Wolves serial and the second by Rob Sanders, picking up where The Darkness of Angels left off. With the help of his Dark Angel allies Krom Dragongaze has made it off Commorragh, and before long sees Ulrik the Slayer arrive to return him to his chapter. Despite initial hostilities the Wolves and the Angels soon find themselves united in purpose, tracking down a traitor Marine who might hold a clue to Logan Grimnar’s location.

The Darkness of Angels

QUICK REVIEW : The Darkness of Angels – Rob Sanders

The fifth title in Black Library’s Space Wolves serial sees Rob Sanders get involved with his short story The Darkness of Angels. We last saw Krom Dragongaze fighting for survival in the arenas of Commoragh and that’s where we find him here, battling against all manner of monstrosity and forced to accept help from a Dark Angel, of all people, in order to survive. With time running out for the Marines, can Krom and his new allies find a way to escape?
