Event Roundup: Black Library Live 2018

On Saturday 16th June, Warhammer World in Nottingham played host to Black Library Live 2018 – the latest event dedicated exclusively to Black Library. With seminars, signings, masses of books to buy and loads of other Black Library fans to chat with, it was a great day – and as usual I wanted to write up some of my thoughts about the event. This isn’t a fully comprehensive write up of the whole event, as there were too many seminars for one person to attend, so instead it’s an overall roundup of what I saw and how I felt it all went, including a Coming Soon section at the end. Spoiler – it was great, and everyone involved should be very proud!

Black Library at the Horus Heresy and Necromunda Weekender 2018

The weekend of the 3rd and 4th of February saw a few hundred Warhammer fans descend upon the Nottingham Belfry for the sixth annual Horus Heresy Weekender event, except in 2018 the mould was broken with the addition of Necromunda. While you could look at this as the first step towards a future Forge World Weekender, covering all of the different games created and supported by Forge World, this year’s event it was officially labelled the Horus Heresy and Necromunda Weekender. It’s a bit of a mouthful – doesn’t exactly trip off the tongue – but there you go.

As always, Black Library were in attendance with a range of guests to support their Horus Heresy fiction line, and also to talk about upcoming Necromunda releases. As you might expect, that was the main draw for me at this event – I do like the miniatures and the games, but my main interest is always the fiction, so I focused my attention for the most part on that side of things over the weekend. Unlike the Black Library Weekender I’m not going to do quite such a comprehensive write up looking at individual seminars, but I do want to talk a little bit about the event overall, and relay some interesting Black Library-related information I picked up while I was there.

The Horus Heresy Weekender 2017 – Quick Roundup

The weekend of the 4th and 5th of February 2017 saw several hundred Horus Heresy fans descend upon the Nottingham Belfry for the fifth Horus Heresy Weekender, two days (plus a bit of the Friday evening, too) of seminars, gaming and general hobby fun. If you’ve never been to one of these Weekenders, they encompass pretty much everything you can think of regarding the Heresy, with Games Workshop, Forge World and Black Library in attendance, and they give the us fans a great opportunity to spend some quality time with the people who are creating the books, games and miniatures bringing the Heresy to life.

Black Library Live Coming Soon – Age of Sigmar

In the last of three posts covering the new titles announced at Black Library Live 2016, this time I’m looking at a couple of newly-announced titles for the Warhammer Age of Sigmar range – both by the incredibly productive Josh Reynolds.

As with the previous posts (on the upcoming Warhammer 40,000 and Horus Heresy titles) there were no release dates given for either of these new titles, and neither of these have got covers yet.

We didn’t get a lot of details on these in the seminar, but I spoke to Josh Reynolds, author of both titles, who gave me a little bit of information about each of them.

Black Library Live Coming Soon – The Horus Heresy

In the second of three posts covering the new titles announced at Black Library Live 2016, I’m taking a look here at the upcoming Horus Heresy releases (including the Primarchs series). I’ve included comments from series editor Laurie Goulding alongside some of the titles, to give a little extra detail.

As with the previous post (on the upcoming Warhammer 40,000 titles) it’s worth remembering that these are not necessarily listed in publication order – no release dates were given. Once again I’ve not included anything that (at the time of writing) is showing up in the Coming Soon section of the Black Library website.

Black Library Live Coming Soon – Warhammer 40,000

The first seminar of Black Library Live 2016 was all about what’s coming up in the next year or so from Black Library. Featuring Nick Kyme and Laurie Goulding, it saw our two intrepid editors running through a load of upcoming titles from various settings, and providing a little bit of background to most of them. I got the distinct impression that this may not be all of the new releases for next year, as I think they’re keen to keep some things back as surprises, but they covered a good number of titles.

I’ve listed out all of the titles that were mentioned in the first seminar, with as much detail as I have about each. There were so many new releases that I’ve split things out into multiple posts, beginning in this one with the new Warhammer 40,000 titles. It’s worth pointing out that these are in no particular order as release dates were not provided, that I’m not including anything that’s currently (at the time of writing) displayed in the Coming Soon section on the Black Library website, and that some of these covers are going to change before publication.

Gollancz Fest 2016

Gollancz Festival 2016

The weekend of the 17th and 18th September saw science fiction and fantasy publisher Gollancz put on its annual Gollancz Fest event, a two-day affair giving fans and writers the opportunity to mingle, network and discuss their shared love for the genres. Taking place at the beautiful Foyles bookshop on Charing Cross Road and the slightly less beautiful Phoenix Artist Club just across the road, it was split up into a range of sessions including workshops, panels and even a party, meaning fans could pick and choose what they wanted to attend over the two days.

Black Library Live! 2016 – Here’s Hoping!

The fans have spoken, Black Library have listened, and events are back on the calendar with the announcement of Black Library Live! 2016. Dedicated Black Library events, that is – since the last Black Library events in 2014 there have been a couple of Horus Heresy Weekenders run in conjunction with Forge World, and various events at Warhammer World, but nothing that’s been specifically focused on the fiction of the Warhammer universes. The other events have been fun, but it’s about time we got something dedicated to the work of Black Library.
