QUICK REVIEW: One, Untended – David Guymer

A sequel of sorts to the epic audio drama Realmslayer, David Guymer’s short story One, Untended sees dwarf-out-of-time Gotrek Gurnisson embark on a perilous quest into the tunnels under Hammerhal Ghyra in search of a lost child. Despite being somewhat worse for wear after a heavy night, when Gotrek hears of a fearsome spirit said to haunt the catacombs he immediately joins the search alongside a party of humans, dragging Maleneth along for the ride. The aelf is none too keen to be accompanying Gotrek, but down amongst the darkness she sees an opportunity waiting to be grasped.

There’s all the usual hallmarks of a Gotrek (with or without Felix) story, from dark and creepy locations to a belligerent Gotrek throwing himself into danger, not to mention a somewhat unwilling companion offering commentary on events as they take place. Maleneth actually shares a few familiarities with Felix as the viewpoint character of this story, although she offers a rather less flattering perspective, clearly not entirely keen on spending time with the slayer. There are some spoilers if you haven’t listened to Realmslayer, but otherwise it’s an excellent continuation of Gotrek’s saga, an interesting little exploration of Maleneth’s motivations, and a satisfying story in its own right.
