QUICK REVIEW: Dismember the Titans – Graeme Lyon

This story is currently only available within Inferno! Volume Three.

A much-deserved sequel to the excellent Mazlocke’s Cantrip of Superior Substitution, Graeme Lyon’s Blood Bowl short story Dismember the Titans returns to the characters of Juliana and Johann, now the Talabheim Titans’ star Blitzer/Catcher duo. Death is a workplace hazard for Blood Bowl players, but it usually happens on the pitch and in front of a crowd, not in secret. When their fellow players start turning up very dead, and minus some body parts, it falls to Juliana and Johann to investigate and try to find out who it is that has a grudge against the Titans, and why.

Nick Kyme Talks More Guts, More Glory

Towards the end of 2016, much to the delight of Games Workshop/Black Library fans and comic readers alike, Titan Comics began to publish a brand new series of comics based on Games Workshop properties. Beginning with the Warhammer 40,000 comic Will of Iron by George Mann, in the last few months they’ve extended the range to include Dawn of War III: The Hunt for Gabriel Angelos and also a Blood Bowl comic – More Guts, More Glory.

Written by Nick Kyme, author of countless Black Library books (not to mention Sherlock Holmes: The Legacy of Deeds, published by Titan Books) and editor of many more, More Guts, More Glory is a four-part series illustrated by Jack Jadson and set in the bonkers sort-of-Warhammer world of Blood Bowl.

QUICK REVIEW: The Hack Attack – Matt Forbeck

Ten years after the last book in his Blood Bowl series (Rumble in the Jungle) was published, Matt Forbeck returns to Black Library with a brand new Blood Bowl short story, The Hack Attack. Joined by ageing team captain Dirk Hoffnung, the legendary Jim and Bob take us on a retrospective journey through the recent history of the Bad Bay Hackers, focusing mostly on Dirk and his brother, Dunk. Along the way they relive key moments from famous matches, and post the question to Dirk of what he plans to do when he finally hangs his boots up.

QUICK REVIEW: Pride and Penitence – Alec Worley

For his second Black Library short story, Alec Worley tackles the famous Blood Bowl team The Bright Crusaders, who are finding it tough in the final of the Purity Cup against the skaven of the Doomtown Rats. Desperate to prove that they can win big despite their famous no-cheating stance they turn to their star player, Gerhardt the Penitent, to see them through. The only problem is, Gerhardt’s skill on the pitch is equalled by his obsession with proving his humility in ways which invariably hinder the team’s progress. With time running out, can he find a way to retain his code and still help his team win?

QUICK REVIEW: Mazlocke’s Cantrip of Superior Substitution – Graeme Lyon

Graeme Lyon’s wonderfully titled Blood Bowl short story Mazlocke’s Cantrip of Superior Substitution sees the legendary Jim and Bob commentating on a lower league match with a noticeable lack of enthusiasm. Little do they know that the desperate coach of the Black Water Boyz has hired an unlicensed wizard to give his team an edge over their opponents, the Talabheim Titans. When the wizard’s spell takes effect, what seemed sure to be an uninspiring match turns into something rather more spectacular. Of course, an unlicensed wizard might not prove to be the most reliable of options for the Boyz…

QUICK REVIEW: Foul Play – Andy Hall

Andy Hall’s second Blood Bowl short story, Foul Play follows retired lineman Gulden von Sulkenhof, otherwise known as Sulk, who’s reduced to working as hired muscle for a pair of ogre gangsters. When his bosses place a risky bet on a match between the Gouged Eye and the Dwarf Giants, Sulk is roped in to be the referee in order to ensure the result goes their way. That’s easier said than done, and Sulk quickly finds himself between the Blood Bowl equivalent of a rock and a hard place.

QUICK REVIEW: Scrape to Victory – Gav Thorpe

The eighth new Blood Bowl story to come out of Black Library in recent months, Gav Thorpe’s Scrape to Victory follows aspiring lineman (linerat?) Kikkit of the lower-tier Crookback Cretins in his quest to escape a life of grinding monotony and danger for the opportunity to play for the Skavenblight Scramblers. All he needs to do is earn one more confirmed injury as a result of a foul, to claim the all-time record and his place in the big league – easy-easy, surely? Maybe not, with his debts suddenly being called in and only a single match left in the season!

QUICK REVIEW: The Skeleton Key – David Annandale

Another Blood Bowl story from Black Library, The Skeleton Key is David Annandale’s first contribution to this growing collection of highly entertaining tales. This time the story is told from the perspective of mummy Ramtut the Third, as his Champions of Death undead team take on the honest-to-a-fault Bright Crusaders in the Dungeonbowl. Unlike a standard Blood Bowl game this involves a search for both the ball and the end zones, along with traps, teleporting skeletons, interfering goblins, and even a little cross-dimensional travel. It’s a clash of heroes against monsters even while Ramtut despairs at how far he’s fallen.

QUICK REVIEW: A Last Sniff of Glory – David Guymer

For his first Blood Bowl story, David Guymer returns to the skaven with A Last Sniff of Glory, a tale of determination, desperation and performance-enhancing drug abuse. Ageing Skavenblight Scramblers star player Rurrk is long past his prime, but when the opportunity to rekindle his waning career presents itself he throws everything he has left into a final attempt to regain the adulation of the crowd that he craves so much. Facing up against an old rival, he uses everything at his disposal to ensure his place in the team’s starting lineup in spite of failing health and an ailing body.

QUICK REVIEW: Hoppo’s Pies – Guy Haley

The latest in a growing line of new Blood Bowl fiction, Guy Haley’s short story Hoppo’s Pies focuses (perhaps unsurprisingly, considering Haley’s predilections) on the ‘Grotty Stealers’, a goblin team long past their prime. With an increasingly decrepit and ill-attended stadium, a team full of inept players, and rising debts, Coach Diglit mourns his days as a player even as he worries about how to keep the team going. Just as his fears seem about to come to fruition, a chance encounter leads him to a plan that might just save both the team and his own neck…involving pies.
