QUICK REVIEW: In the Mists of Chaos – Rik Hoskin

This story is currently only available within Inferno! Volume Three.

The Black Library debut for Rik Hoskin, Age of Sigmar short story In the Mists of Chaos is a grim little story of human bravery and faith in the face of the twisting nature of the Ruinous Powers. Having played a crucial role in the defence of his village against a Chaos warband led by the sorcerer Ty’Gzar, Freeguild soldier Uffo Weisz finds himself with a legend to live up to. When the forces of Ty’Gzar return, Weisz leads his men in a confident defence of the village and its people, but the influence of Chaos can be dangerously subtle.

While clearly grounded in the Age of Sigmar aesthetic – Weisz is a Freeguild soldier, and Ty’Gzar’s forces Tzeentchian Arcanites – there’s nonetheless quite an old-school Warhammer feel to the tone of this story, as the titular mists rise and Weisz battles on in increasing isolation. It’s bloody and action-packed, but for all the visceral fury of the fighting it’s powerfully grim, as Weisz’s certainties are undermined and his strength and skill turned against him. Essentially a single extended vignette, there’s not a lot of real character development, but as a quick little glimpse of the classic Order vs Chaos conflict within the Mortal Realms it’s cleverly done and worth a read.
