QUICK REVIEW: Guns of the Black Eagle – CL Werner

A short Age of Sigmar audio drama, CL Werner’s Guns of the Black Eagle is twenty minutes of sheer fun as two Kharadon Overlords captains vie for honour and profits, holding fast to the letter – if not the spirit – of the Kharadron Code. The Black Eagle, under the captaincy of Grimgar Odriksson, is being pursued by the piratical sky-captain Skarskorr Halfbeard, but Grimgar is determined to keep control of the aether-gold filling his ship’s holds. As Endrinmaster Thorgrad looks on, Grimgar and Skarskorr engage in a battle of ships, crews and wits, with neither one prepared to back down.

In twenty minutes Werner cuts right to the heart of the Kharadron, perfectly balancing the opposing forces of greed and honour, all wrapped up in typical dwarven belligerence. It’s satisfyingly dialogue-heavy, taking advantage of the audio medium with atmospheric, scene-setting SFX and music providing the backdrop for the entertaining – and often hilariously over-dramatic – script and great performances. The three-strong cast (John Banks as Grimgar, Steve Conlin as Thorgrad and David Seddon as Skarskarr) are obviously having tremendous fun with the gruff, bombastic northern accents, and the whole thing is great entertainment – albeit not to be taken too seriously. It’s short, but hugely satisfying.

[Note: I’ve no idea if I’ve spelled the character names correctly, as I’m going purely off the audio!]
