QUICK REVIEW: The Resolute – Josh Reynolds

One of two Josh Reynolds short stories originally published in the Legends of the Age of Sigmar: Sylvaneth anthology, The Resolute is a story of both the sylvaneth and the Hallowed Knights. The reed-city of Gramin, long ago ravaged by the armies of Nurgle, is once more befouled by the presence of the Order of the Fly. Felyndael and his fellow tree-revenants hasten to recover the dormant seed-pods slumbering beneath the city, but such are the forces set against them that they are begrudgingly forced to accept the aid of Aetius Shield-born and his Stormcast Eternals.

On the surface this takes an interesting look at Felyndael and his tree-revenants – how they think and fight, how they communicate and what their motivations are – that sheds some light on the warlike aspect of the sylvaneth. It’s also, however, a continuation of the Steel Souls storyline that Reynolds is gradually building up, sitting somewhere between (CL Werner’s) Wardens of the Everqueen and Plague Garden and adding a little extra depth to the characters of Aetius and Solus. The two aspects of the story are nicely interwoven and work as a cohesive whole that once again demonstrates Reynolds’ strong grasp of the Age of Sigmar setting, although anyone looking for a pure sylvaneth story might be better off trying elsewhere.
