RAPID FIRE: David Annandale Talks The Dominion of Bones

Welcome to this instalment of Rapid Fire, my ongoing series of quick interviews with authors talking about their new releases. These are short and sweet interviews, with the idea being that each author will answer (more or less) the same questions – by the end of each interview I hope you will have a good idea of what the new book (or audio drama) is about, what inspired it and why you might want to read or listen to it.

In this instalment I spoke to Black Library author David Annandale about The Dominion of Bones, his second Age of Sigmar novel featuring the vampire Neferata, which is available to buy in hardback, ebook and audiobook right now!

The Wicked and the Damned – David Annandale, Phil Kelly and Josh Reynolds

One of the first batch of releases published by Black Library under the Warhammer Horror label, the Wicked and the Damned is a portmanteau story – a collection of three loosely linked novellas, by David Annandale, Phil Kelly and Josh Reynolds. On the mist-shrouded cemetery world of Silence, three strangers – a commissar, an officer and a priest – are brought together seemingly by random, surrounded by the dead with only each other and the sinister mortuary-servitors for company. Confused and unsettled, to try and understand what’s going on and why they’ve been gathered together they each tell the story of what they remember last, and what led them to Silence.

QUICK REVIEW: The Hunt – David Annandale

The first Warhammer Horror short story to get a standalone ebook release – and Book 1 of the Digital Horror Week 2019 collection – David Annandale’s The Hunt is an unconventional Age of Sigmar story of guilt, fear, and ghosts both literal and metaphorical. In the Free City of Everyth, in the Realm of Ghur, witch hunter Bered Davan waits for his doom to find him, spending his final moments torn between duty and shame. When a figure from his past calls for him, dredging up painful old emotions, Davan determines to follow his calling and hope for some kind of forgiveness.

QUICK REVIEW: Obsidian – David Annandale

Obsidian is available as either a standalone e-short or featured within the Gods & Mortals short story anthology.

One of a growing number of Neferata stories exploring the political power structures of Nulahmia and the relationship the Mortarch of Blood has with her subjects, David Annandale’s Obsidian is a short but satisfying tale of two houses briefly united in unexpected love. When young lovers Karya Treveign and Evered Halorecht seek Neferata’s blessing for their union, it seems as though the ensuing wedding will bring the long conflict between their houses to a close. It remains to be seen, however, whether their love is as star-crossed and innocent as it appears, and how their families will behave during the wedding ceremony.

Scions of the Emperor – Anthology

Continuing with the template (and naming convention) laid down with 2018’s Sons of the Emperor anthology, Scions of the Emperor is a Primarchs anthology featuring eight Horus Heresy short stories from eight different authors. Where it differs is that these stories are almost all from authors not normally associated with their chosen characters. There’s a mixture of stories from across the breadth of the Heresy timeline, from young Ferrus Manus and Roboute Guilliman on their respective home worlds to Rogal Dorn on Terra on the eve of the Siege, via the highs and lows of the Great Crusade and onwards.

Gods & Mortals – an Age of Sigmar anthology

In three and a half years the Age of Sigmar setting has grown from fairly humble beginnings into something wild and imaginative, with vast scope for storytelling and almost unlimited potential. In that time, alongside a couple of dozen novels we’ve seen a whole host of short stories published, some tying in with ongoing narratives and others standing alone. Over a whopping 400+ pages Gods & Mortals collects together eighteen short stories into an impressive anthology, eight of which are brand new while the other ten are drawn from those previously-published tales. Eighteen stories, nine authors, and lots to enjoy.

QUICK REVIEW: Black Atonement – David Annandale

David Annandale continues his exploration of Neferata in Age of Sigmar with Black Atonement, a short audio drama which sees the Mortarch of Blood getting creative with her punishments. The city of Shadowvel lies outside the borders of Neferatia, yet to Neferata’s eyes it benefits greatly from its proximity to her realm. Displeased with the city and its prideful citizens, she intends to see it destroyed, and employs her prodigious talent for manipulation to make it so. The Maggotkin of Nurgle desire Shadowvel for themselves, but the city’s powerful defences need to be nullified if Neferata’s plan is to succeed.

Spear of Ultramar – David Annandale

One of two Horus Heresy novellas billed as prequels to the Siege of Terra, David Annandale’s Spear of Ultramar provides a brief but satisfying exploration of the challenges facing Guilliman and the Ultramarines as they race for Terra. Despite being vastly outnumbered the Iron Warriors are determined to delay Guilliman for as long as they can, so lay a trap that they know the Avenging Son will recognise, but will have no choice but to spring.
