Stratagem

QUICK REVIEW : Stratagem – Nick Kyme

On the fifth day of Christmas Black Library gave to us…a Horus Heresy audio drama by Nick Kyme. Following on from Censure and The Unremembered Empire, Stratagem features Aeonid Thiel (for real this time) on his return to Macragge, as he meets with the primarch Roboute Guilliman to discuss his place within the Ultramarines legion. His unconventional mindset and methods have served him well so far, but what will his purpose be in the new Imperium Secundus?

This is a quiet, dialogue-heavy piece, the majority of its twenty-minute length comprising of Thiel and Guilliman’s discussion. It’s a good example of the audio format being used to show a small moment with a big impact, looking as it does at the inspiration Thiel provides for Guilliman and the future of the Ultramarines, and indeed the legions overall. While it does occasionally feel a little contrived, it’s a clever way of tying Thiel back in to the wider story, and sets up what could be an interesting little subplot for the Imperium Secundus strand. The voice work is good without standing out this time, and overall this is an interesting, if probably non-essential addition to the Heresy series.
